As a young boy growing up in Chicago I have to admit that Evel Knievel was my hero. I had all of the Evel Knievel toys, including a working model of Evel’s 18 wheel equipment truck.
In our suburban Chicago neighborhood, the whole Evel Knievel thing really got out of hand. We had kids building ramps (including me) and many of us jumping as many as six garbage cans riding bicycles. This was as fun as the summer could get, watching your friends taking turns jumping and mostly crashing their bikes. Thank God that none of us were seriously hurt.
I remember for weeks the building excitement as Evel was going to jump the Snake River at the Grand Canyon in 1974. I remember watching on live TV with Howard Cosell doing the minute by minute announcing. Wow, this guy was a live super hero!
A big part of my childhood memories, are now just that – memories. Goodbye Evel Knievel, we will all miss you.
